To get a discount on him, you have to give him the 8th year.

8x10, probably.

He's not gonna sign a 6 year deal unless they pay him like 12 per.

Just my 2 cents

If the CBA is going to continue to restrict player salaries while they are in their primes, then you are going to have to overpay players when they reach their first payday. The fact that Karlsson and Doughty make $6.5M and $7M per season, respectively, is absurd. The fact is that you pay for what players have done, and not what they're going to do.

Like the man said himself, he's going to get paid, or he's going to somewhere else. As the third best player in the game (as you claim, I'm not sure I agree), why does he deserve to get paid less than players like Kane or Toews? When you're dealing with generational talent like Karlsson or Doughty, anything but 8 years is off the table, because, as you again say, after a 6 year extension when he's 35, there's no way he's going to get nearly as much as he could get now.

I agree with Tumbleweed. It will likely be in the 8 year @ $12 million range. If you think you're going to sign him for 6 years @ $10 million or 8 years @ $8 million, you're deluding yourself. If you can get him to agree to a contract under $100 million, sign it and consider yourself lucky that he chose to stay in Ottawa.

Karlsson says he was taken out of context and wants to stay in Ottawa. I have no reason to doubt him if i have learned anything about Swede's from hockey they are brutally honest

The Toronto media or Leafs Booster club are overtly Sens haters it and love stirring the pot here remember the home opener ,yes the news turned out correct but perhaps that also helped break down negotiations with Turris . now they are employing the same tatics with Karlsson

Much rather have Reilly/zeitsev for the Karlson contract! If I’m Leafs I stay away and if I’m Ottawa I move him as soon as you can. Even if you want max bucks for your next contract, you don’t brashly advertise that approach. Who needs that attitude......trade him.

Karlsson is an amazing player and he should get what he deserves, but for heaven's sake, shut up about contract talks when you're signed through 2018-2019 and your team is on one of the worst losing stretches in recent franchise history. The right answer to any contract questions is: "That's not important right now. This team is losing too many games and as the captain I have to help find ways to turn it around. We can talk contract this summer or the next. Please don't ask me about it again."

Speaking of captaincy - why no players only meeting? Alfie and company held them when times were bad and more often than not, things turned around.

You think a 29 year old Karlsson is going to get the same as a 22 year old McDavid? Not a chance. Not in Ottawa, not anywhere.

i have no idea really...my feeling is it will be close to that....i think there are a ton of teams that would pay him that...including ottawa

it would be great if he takes less...i mean minium is gonna probably be 11 a year i would think...its for sure over 10...

Yeah that would’ve been a way better comment to give.

I’m surprised he said what he did, maybe just frustrated with the slump at the moment.

For a player of McDavid's calibre UFA or RFA doesn't matter. You are buying his prime years, whereas Karlsson's best years will mostly be behind him by the time that contract comes.

nhl doesn't pay for this.

nhl pays for past performance. you seem to not understand this.

and anyways, guys of karlsson's level stay great into their mid 30's.

it'll be interesting if you view karlsson past his prime in the same light when it comes to trading him.

if he's an $8M player, then expect a phil kessel return.

I could see a front-loaded deal like Crosby where he makes $10-12 for 3-4 years but the cap hit will be lower because salary at the tail end also comes down, well within the legal parameters of course!

I mean, yes, but they would do the same for any star. The Toronto Media would love for their to be rumors like this in regards to Mathews, they'd get 24 hour coverage for weeks.
